1. He knows who doesn't need an operation Dr. Shah isn't one of those "surgery-for-all" surgeons. You are not on a conveyor belt towards a procedure. He believes strongly in active surveillance for prostate cancer and non-surgical treatments for enlarged prostate. In 2016, his team presented data showing a large percentage of his patients were going on active surveillance, a rarity for such an experienced surgeon. (South Central Section AUA, 2016 - 3rd place). As an academic urologist, he keeps abreast of the latest research and embraces genuine advances. However, he doesn't automatically toss out the tried and true. That's true experience. 2. He personally reviews your case This takes time. He routinely reviews outside MRIs, ultrasounds, and PSMA scans -- the images, not just the report. He likes to show his patients areas of concern on the xrays. He will point out areas that he may disagree with the radiologist. There are a lot of subtleties with PIRADS lesions that the P.G. can clarify because of his vast experience reviewing prostate MRIs. He will try to determine if you actually have something of concern or something that can be observed. 3. Just want to consult? No problem Looking for a 2nd/3rd/4th opinion? No problem. No patient should ever feel guilty in seeing someone for information only. There is no obligation to have a surgery, procedure, or even an exam if you do not want to. Dr. Shah may also be able to recommend or refer you to someone outside of NM, if you so desire. Dr. Shah's patients tend to be independent thinkers who don't jump at "gold standards" or get enamored by glitzy marketing. 4. He can give you diet and exercise tips Dr. Shah believes healing is multifactorial - diet, exercise, mental outlook can all improve health. As a lifelong vegetarian, certified yoga instructor, and karate black-belt, Dr. Shah is serious about finding non-medical ways to optimal health. 5. He is a surgeon who believes in fewer invasive procedures Refreshing isn't it? Not every patient with benign enlargement needs a cystoscopy or urodynamics. Elevated PSA doesn't automatically require a biopsy. Dr. Shah believes in fully utilizing urine, blood, and imaging diagnostics before considering invasive procedures which carry risk. 6. He personally takes care of his patients Today's medical climate is full of physician extenders, zoom visits, and other shortcuts. Dr. Shah believes in traditional patient-physician interactions: in-person and face-to-face. The visit ends when your questions have been fully answered. 7. His credentials are unmatched Dr. Shah is 100% USA-trained. He graduated at the top of his med school class, achieving the highest honor for a medical student: election to Alpha Omega Alpha honor society (medicine's version of "Top Gun"). While in residency, he had the highest in-service score among all Urology residents nationwide. He is now a Professor of Surgery at one of the nation's top NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers.
